The Showrunner Reveals He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the popular series reaching its finale—and a second season officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to force fed hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Does the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a decent plan for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
