Amid sleet, snow, and a swirling breeze from the banks of the Humber, combined with a resolute home side fighting for a top-flight place, this presented all the makings of a challenging night's work for the visitors.

Seventy-two hours after letting slip a 2-0 advantage in the Premier League, there was a sniff of fragility about Chelsea going into this intriguing cup clash. The packed Hull support clearly sensed it too, but Rosenior's men handled the task with ease.

The first was for the opening goal as his through ball set up Neto to score from range. Shortly after the second half began, it was 2-0 as Neto's set-piece went straight in under Phillips's legs.

Tie Sealed and Focus Shifts

Soon after the second goal, the match was effectively ended as a dazzling dribble from the forward laid on Estêvão to tap into an empty net. Neto then completed his hat-trick as Delap again delivered the crucial pass for the attacker to coolly slot past a stranded Phillips.

By that stage, the effort Hull had put in in the opening thirty minutes had long since erased. Their priority must now switch back to achieving a return to the Premier League under Sergej Jakirovic, who left out several key individuals with that goal in mind.

"In my opinion we deserved at least one goal but if we perform like this we will be in a very good position in the Championship," the Hull manager commented. "Keep fighting, maybe in the next matches this can be a good lesson of how we must play."

Hull showed great effort to the end, and they almost claimed a consolation when Lewis Koumas hit a the upright in injury time. But this was the Blues' evening, and another encouraging stride for their new manager at a place he is familiar with intimately.

Cup Omens Look Promising

That resulted in an ultimately routine night's work, and the FA Cup-shaped signs are positive from here for Chelsea. They have played Hull on three previous occasions in this tournament in the past ten years and on each occasion, they have gone on to reach the final.
