The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
