The Brothers from the Dagestani Region Making Their Mark in Mixed Martial Arts and at Manchester United.

Ibragim Ibragimov breaks into a smile as he thinks about how his clan's life has evolved since relocating to England from Dagestan in 2017.

"I adore it here," the PFL competitor declares.

"We frequently remark, 'this is the country I ought to have been born in.'"

The young man left his homeland in the North Caucasus of Russia because his father was convinced a move spanning more than 3,000 miles promised superior career prospects for him and his siblings.

The initial plan was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to finish their education before joining one of the nation's universities.

However, life has turned out somewhat different for the Ibragimov household.

Ibragim is now a pro MMA fighter and is regarded as one of the leading prospects in the PFL, a leading MMA league.

His siblings have chosen a different route in sport and have all been signed by Manchester United – with Amir vying for a place in the first team.

"Our key goal for us is to extract the maximum from our chosen fields," says Ibragim.

"I hope them to represent all of the top teams in the world. Now it is Man United, in the future it could be a another team."

From Grapplers to Football Talents

Located in southern Russia, Dagestan has a mystical status among combat sports enthusiasts for generating a host of UFC titleholders in the past few years.

The area has a rich history in grappling, thriving in the sambo style and creating a host of Olympic and world winners.

This achievement is not a coincidence, though, as children from the region are often pushed to take up fighting, specifically wrestling, almost as soon as they can stand.

"As a a kid, my dad was always instructing me and my younger brothers that we had to be powerful, first to defend yourself, your family, and your companions," states Ibragim.

"Therefore we all became accustomed to combat, and that's why people understands how to fight in Dagestan. It's not a surprise."

"Amir was a highly skilled wrestler. You can observe the transition from wrestling to football; obviously, it assisted my little brothers a great deal."

"Many of the players he faces don't have the identical foundation he has. That's why he's solid, powerful and really competitive – due to wrestling."

Amir was just nine years old when he was being tested at Sheffield United. Not knowing of his real age, trainers placed him with boys five years older.

He was not intimidated by the mistake and was more than comfortable holding his own against older players thanks to his background in wrestling.

"They believed Amir and I were the same age, so the story goes," says Ibragim.

Amir was recruited, along with Ibragim's younger brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The family's time in South Yorkshire was brief, though, as only weeks after signing for the Blades, Manchester United learned of Amir's ability and he moved across the Pennines as a result.

"They faced Manchester United in a tournament and Amir netted a spectacular free-kick," says Ibragim.

"One of their scouts watched him play and selected him straight away."

Half a dozen years after signing for the Old Trafford club and at the age of 15, Amir became one of the youngest players in the club's history to practice with the senior side when he did so in April 2023.

"Do you know what he told me? 'Here is where I belong'," Ibragim reveals.

"Is he able to be a first-team player for Manchester United? Without a doubt. They should allow all the youthful players get game time right now."

"I don't think they would play less effectively than the current first-team players. I believe the youngsters are hungrier than the current squad members."

Following that, Gazik and Muhammad, the younger once on the books of Manchester City, have likewise made the move to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this youngster is talented," continues Ibragim.

"He picked up every skill faster than the others. He's a good defender. He's going to be similar to a modern Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'A Goal' to Compete at the Theatre of Dreams

Ibragim has now relocated to Manchester and spends most of his days perfecting his MMA abilities at a local gym.

In August, he passed three weeks in his homeland at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, helping Islam Makhachev get ready for a late-year UFC championship bout.

"I would never have thought I would be learning under Khabib," Ibragim admits.

"He was the best fighter in the world – and we always used to look up to him when we were growing up."

"Today, I'm here in his gym and training with Islam Makhachev."

Recently training with two UFC titleholders from Dagestan, it is unsurprising Ibragim says he is desperate to win a world title of his own someday.

However that does not stop him from occasionally fantasizing of representing United and walking out on the hallowed turf at Old Trafford, similar to his brothers.

"I had a PlayStation at home and I constantly used to play as Man United, scoring goals with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez," he says.

"Today, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's like a dream come true."

"A fight at Old Trafford? It's a ambition for me. I was discussing with the PFL officials about it to see if they could do it. It would be huge."
