Scream Original Star the Actor Fears He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.

The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a major family reunion. This latest installment signals the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters returning to the fray.

"Coming back to a role you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.

A Triumphant Return for Fallon Characters

It has been established that three different characters from past films are set to return in this latest sequel, despite meeting their demise in previous installments. The precise method of their resurrection remains a mystery. Audiences should get ready for the return of the endearing and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Legendary Status

For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first occasion since a small appearance is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the exact moment he got the offer from the series creator.

"I recall the phone call. I remember the small talk. I recall him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my mind," he says. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.

"Truthfully, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he explains. "A part that is now embodied in every single Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."

The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fandom

Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular franchise.

"The outcome is either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Theories and Anticipation Run High

While countless longtime fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are somehow still living in a strange communal situation. The chance of a self-referential narrative, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also is on the table.

Audiences will find out the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
