'Our Mission Involves Solely Eliminating' - How Sudan's Brutal Fighting Force Perpetrated a Mass Killing

Combatants chuckle as they travel on the bed of a pick-up truck, hurrying past a series of several lifeless forms and driving in the direction of the descending African evening sky.

"Observe such effort. See this act of genocide," a combatant shouts.

The individual grins as he turns the camera on himself and his associate fighters, their paramilitary identification on display: "These people shall all perish like this."

The men are celebrating a mass killing that humanitarian officials believe killed over 2,000 civilians in the Sudanese urban center of el-Fasher in recent weeks.

A Community Isolated from the World

After maintaining the city under blockade for almost 24 months, from August the paramilitary force advanced to consolidate its position and restrict the leftover inhabitants.

Satellite images show that fighters started to erect a massive sand wall - a built-up sand barrier - encircling the edges of al-Fashir, sealing off entry points and preventing aid.

As the siege intensified, multiple people were killed in an RSF strike on a place of worship on September 19th, while the UN said dozens further were killed in drone and heavy weapon attacks on a displacement camp in the autumn.

Disturbing Footage Depicts Weaponless Individuals Executed

At dawn on October 26th the RSF defeated the final government strongholds and took control of the main headquarters in the community, the command center of the Army Division, as the military pulled back.

Perhaps the most disturbing videos to surface and examined depicted the consequences of a massacre at a university building on the west of the urban area, where dozens lifeless forms were observed scattered over the area.

An elderly man clad in a white tunic remained alone amid the corpses. The man rotated to glance as a fighter equipped with a rifle walked down the staircase in the direction of the victim. lifting his firearm, the fighter released a one round at the individual, who dropped to the ground lifeless.

"For what reason is this person yet alive," a militiaman shouted. "Execute this person."

Space-based imagery recorded on October 26th appeared to substantiate that shootings were furthermore performed on the thoroughfares of the city, based on a study issued by the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab.

One witness who provided testimony reported the individual had witnessed "numerous of our family members being executed - these individuals were collected in a single location and each one murdered."

Militia Commanders Attempt to Implement Reputation Management

Following the events that ensued from the killings, militia commander admitted that his forces had perpetrated "violations" and announced the events would be looked into.

Part of the arrested was following a report recording his killings. Carefully choreographed and modified video posted on the paramilitary's authorized social media account show him being escorted into a cell at a detention facility on the perimeter of al-Fashir.

At the same time, the paramilitary force and affiliated digital profiles started trying to reframe the narrative.

Updates presenting its combatants distributing aid to inhabitants were disseminated by some individuals, while the force's communications team shared multiple recordings purporting to demonstrate the humane treatment of government captives.

Despite the digital effort being used by the RSF, their activities in el-Fasher have provoked global outrage.
