LBJ's Legendary Scoring Streak Ends, Yet Lakers Secure Win Against Toronto.
James understood his monumental run of scoring in double figures was at risk. In that crucial moment, though, it was not his focus.
The smart move meant distributing the rock – so he did. With that selfless act, his remarkable run was over.
LeBron's astounding streak of 1,297 consecutive NBA regular season outings scoring at least ten concluded on Thursday night, as basketball's greatest scorer had only eight total points during the Los Angeles Lakers' close win against the Toronto Raptors. He provided the game-winning assist, setting up teammate Rui Hachimura for a triple at the buzzer.
“None,” James said when asked about the streak ending. “The team got the victory.”
An Unselfish Choice Delivers the Win
He might have sought to clinch the contest – while also extending his record – on the final possession, instead, he decided to pass to his teammate stationed in the corner. Rui connected, with LeBron celebrated triumphantly.
“Just playing the game the right way. You always make the right play,” James remarked. That is my philosophy. That’s how I was instructed to play. I’ve done that my whole career.”
James is very conscious exactly how many points he's scored during a game,” commented the team's head coach JJ Redick. He made the play just as he has so many times.”
The Streak's Closing Chapter
He returned to the contest one last time at under five and a half minutes to go, the outcome and his personal record up for grabs. He had a mere six points from a 3-for-15 performance at that juncture.
He managed a basket at 1:46 left to knot the score and missed a shot with one minute to go which could have gotten him to double digits.
He avoided taking one more attempt – but could have. Austin Reaves passed him the ball as time wound down, but James decided to dish it off instead.
The spirits of the game, when you play it the proper way, they will bless you,” Redick added.
A Look Back at an Unparalleled Record
James's streak began over eighteen years ago. It was, by far the most extended double-digit streak in professional basketball: MJ had 866 straight games with 10+ points, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 787 such games, and The Mailman was fourth on the list of 575 games.
He is such an unselfish player,” remarked Lakers center a fellow Laker.
“He’s just playing hoops. He had the opportunity but given the player he is and his character as an individual, he chose the pass, dished to Hachimura and we won the game.”
Reaching double digits had typically been a formality early in the start of fourth quarters. Throughout his run, he had attained ten points by the beginning of the final quarter over twelve hundred times coming into the contest.
But two of those rare games below ten points after three periods had happened recently: He had nine points going into the fourth against Dallas on 28 November, followed by six going into the fourth versus the Suns on Monday night.
James managed to keep the streak alive in the Phoenix game. One game later, it was over – and he celebrated regardless.
I only ever make the correct play. That comes naturally, no matter what,” James declared. “You make the right play, the sports deities forever giving back to me.”
