Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police issued security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
