Hardline Former Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile Next Leader.
Following a conclusive final ballot, hardline politician José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.
A Commanding Victory
After more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast garnered 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been defeated by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Campaign Built On Security and Immigration
Recognized for his staunch socially conservative views and praise for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly built on promises to address growing insecurity and drastically curb immigration.
He frequently cited immigrants, especially the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the race, he gave an ultimatum for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face removal.
His policy ideas envisioned U.S.-style measures such as erecting holding facilities, barriers, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the military presence on the northern border.
Within a Regional Shift
Many observers interpret Kast's victory as aligning with a larger rightward trend in the region, similar to recent political outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other analysts further view it as a continuation of the established rotation of power between left-wing and right governments since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Leading Without a Solid Majority
In spite of his decisive electoral triumph, Kast does not have an overall majority in parliament, not in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are counted together.
This political reality might hinder his agenda, such as a vow to reduce public spending by billions within 18 months—a measure for which he has not offered concrete steps.
"There are numerous aspects about how a Kast government will be that are uncertain because he has not explained his methods for implement them," said a political science professor.
The expert continued, "On fiscal matters, it is very likely we will see austerity policies typical of the right. But the area with considerably less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his central theme during the race."
