Government Official States Ministry of Defence Investigating Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, with Staff Advised to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense minister has confirmed that the MoD is currently investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and staff have been advised to refrain from talking about secret matters in any cars.

Security Advice for MoD Personnel

In a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He said that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a issue in all contemporary cars.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any car, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Defence Background

The revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and cause chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

This wider defence environment highlights the significance of robust measures and caution in all aspects of government operations, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
