Fury Explodes as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Spurs Widespread Rebuke
Individuals from both sides of the partisan divide and the entertainment industry are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic deaths of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Post
After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on his platform to describe the late director as "tortured and struggling". The message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest
Police have since confirmed the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was set at a substantial sum.
A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.
“What a disgusting and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. Goldberg referenced prior comments from Trump about political violence, asking, "Do you have no shame? Can you get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Rebuke from Within Party
Some GOP lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also alluded to challenges with addiction and mental health within families.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his party to defend the statements.
The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy if Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation following the shooting of a different individual.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a element of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" while posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
