Arrangements for Trump-Putin Talks Delayed Days After Budapest Talks Proposed

There are "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has announced.

Last Thursday Trump stated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital soon to examine the war in Ukraine.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The White House declined to provide any more details on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Background Context

Trump had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports claimed his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with sources suggesting Trump had pushed him to cede extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on this week the American president supported a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the hostilities on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines where it stands," he stated.

Russia has repeatedly pushed back against halting the present battle positions.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Lavrov stated on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the war needed to be addressed, Lavrov stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of comprehensive conditions that encompass the recognition of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president stated conversations concerning the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He also said the only topic that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the delivery of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently came ahead of rumors that the US was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could theoretically target inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had emerged as a "significant input" in international relations", he remarked.
