Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide essential functions to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker stated. “Starting next week, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the funding gap. Additionally, a court official ordered the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been brought back to execute layoffs.

A report contended that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the government to conduct terminations, citing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the same day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck for the end of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government running,” the advocate said. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
