‘A Man Who Will Be Deeply Missed’: The Actress Meg Ryan Shares Heartfelt Homage to Director Rob Reiner
The actress Meg Ryan has shared a moving homage to the late filmmaker Rob Reiner, under whose direction she worked in the iconic romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.
A Devastating Incident
Reiner was found dead with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their residence in LA at the weekend.
“How we will long for this man…” Ryan wrote on Instagram, next to an image of them together. “We thank you, Rob and Michele, for your belief in true love, fairy tales, and laughter. We appreciate your faith in human goodness and your deep patriotism.”
Court Case Developments
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and was in court today. He’s being incarcerated with no bail set. Reports indicate that Reiner’s daughter Romy found her father’s body.
“I must hold onto hope that their tale doesn't conclude here, that awareness can be heightened from this,” Ryan went on to write. “Perhaps they would desire a legacy of hope and humanity, leading us toward empathy and tranquility.”
Family Members Issue a Message
Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy issued words today. “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” they said. “Losing our parents in such a horrific way is a devastation beyond comprehension. They were more than parents; they were our closest confidants.”
Colleagues and Friends Remember
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, similarly honored Reiner via comments shared yesterday alongside tributes from Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“His skill for comedy was unmatched, his ear for dialogue perfect, and his dramatic precision was sheer elegance,” the statement said. “He cherished performers and improved scribes. His finest trait was granting creative liberty. He valued input and made you part of the team. Collaborators felt like a unified team. Being guided by him was an honor, yet just one facet of his impact.”
A Lasting Cinematic Legacy
When Harry Met Sally was a box office and critical triumph in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and securing Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner met Michele Singer Reiner during the production of When Harry Met Sally. The pair were introduced by Barry Sonnenfeld, a friend and director.
Reiner’s notable filmography also included classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were together in marriage for 36 years.
